Dangerous Crossing (1953)

Director: Joseph M Newman
Starring: Jeanne Crain, Michael Rennie, Max Showalter
Synopsis:
A newlywed's husband disappears on a cruise ship, but no one believes her. Only the ship's doctor is in any way sympathetic to her, but even he has his doubts and eventually, so does she.
Impressions:
There have been movies in recent years like Flightplan and Unknown that take a similar plot and it's a concept I like. I would've liked it better if the main character didn't get any contact from her husband along the way to better play up the possibility that she was actually imagining the whole thing. Ruth is a very uneven character, going from cool and calculating one minute to completely flipping out the next. The latter really undermines the former. Michael Rennie is solid as Dr. Manning and grants some stability Jeanne Crain lacks. Honestly, I'd rather the movie be from his perspective and keep us guessing about Ruth until the end. C'est la vie. Even with my quibbles, it's worth seeing. Give it a watch.
