Father Goose (1964)
Director: Ralph Nelson
Starring: Cary Grant, Leslie Caron, Trevor Howard
Synopsis:
As Japanese forces overrun the South Pacific, an American expat is compelled to serve as a coast watcher for the Royal Australian Navy and finds himself stuck with a schoolteacher and her students who have been left stranded on another island.
Impressions:
This is a big part of the family film canon, so I've got a particular soft spot for it. It's an interesting subversion having the famously suave Cary Grant as a cranky, drunken bum, but it plays well to his comedic talents. Walter's bickering with Trevor Howard's Frank and Leslie Caron's Catherine is a lot of fun, and then there's the element of all the girls driving him up the walls. It's a fun bit of comedy and one that I'd recommend adding to your collection.
