The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
Director: Wes Craven
Starring: Suze Lanier-Bramlett, Robert Houston, John Steadman
Synopsis:
A family out in the desert looking for an old silver mine have their car break down and become hunted by mutant cannibals.
Impressions:
There's something about the gritty naturalism of late 70s horror. Yes, the acting doesn't tend to be great and the production quality isn't outstanding, but it feels more real than the more polished stuff that came out later. This has a similar feel to the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre and if you like that, you should like this. I'll be honest with you, I didn't really see the family as characters so much as meat, but when I reconsidered the film as Beast's revenge story, I enjoyed it a lot more. It's a rough movie in terms of both content and production values, but if you're a fan Wes Craven or horror films from the period, you'll probably want to give it a watch. Anyone else may not want to apply.
