The Flame and the Arrow (1950)

The Flame and the Arrow (1950)

Director: Jacques Tourneur
Starring: Burt Lancaster, Virginia Mayo, Robert Douglas

Synopsis:
A Lombard mountaineer leads a band of outlaws against the Hessian lord that took his wife and kidnapped his son.

Impressions:
It's rare that an Italian knockoff doesn't actually involve any Italians. This is basically Robin Hood set in Lombardy with Hessians standing in as the bad guys. This is a decent middle-of-the-road film whose main merit is the acrobatic stuntwork. Performances are decent but nothing exceptional. The character dynamics are a little interesting too. It's enough to warrant setting aside the 88 minute runtime.
