The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)

The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)

Director: Terence Fisher
Starring: Peter Cushing, Hazel Court, Robert Urquhart

Synopsis:
Convicted to die, a seemingly mad Victor Frankenstein tells the story of his life, his research and the terrible creation he brought into the world.

Impressions:
Although this film tends to be overshadowed by Horror of Dracula, it really is worth seeing. This too doesn't follow the original story too closely, but Peter Cushing makes such a delightful villain protagonist that you really won't care. While Christopher Lee at least lends his physical presence to his role as the monster, it's a terrible waste that he doesn't get any dialog. In the original story, the monster was reasonably intelligent and capable of speech. Lee would've been able to do much more with the character, but I suppose there's something to be said for silent menace. Although I feel Lee's talents aren't put to sufficient use, this is still one of the better takes on the Frankenstein story, so do yourself a favor and see it.
