The Case of the Lucky Legs (1935)
Director: Archie Mayo
Starring: Warren William, Genevieve Tobin, Patricia Ellis
Synopsis:
When a con man rigging beauty contests ends up dead with a surgical knife in his chest, Perry Mason has to get to the truth of the matter while avoiding the police who want to bring him in over the case.
Impressions:
I know Perry Mason by reputation rather than any hands-on experience. In fact, I was surprised to learn that anyone other than Raymond Burr ever portrayed him or that there were several movies from the 30s. Well, I was quite surprised to find Perry Mason (at least this incarnation of him) to be a bunny ears lawyer prone to quips and japery. The comedy works and Mason's antics are actually pretty funny. Given the subject matter, most of the guys are really skeezy, Mason no exception. It's a fun ride and if you like mysteries of this era, you're in for a treat.
