Burnt Offerings (1976)

Burnt Offerings (1976)

Director: Dan Curtis
Starring: Karen Black, Oliver Reed, Burgess Meredith

Synopsis:
A family rents a house in the country for the summer and soon become victim to its dark influence.

Impressions:
There are a lot of haunted house movies out there, some better than others. This is somewhere in the middle. There's some good tension throughout, but I wasn't terribly drawn to it. Seeing Bette Davis in the cast list, I thought she was saddled with another "hag horror" role, but that isn't the case and she ends up feeling rather underutilized. For what little time he's onscreen, Burgess Meredith is suitably creepy. All told, the movie didn't do that much for me, but I could see other people enjoying it. If you're big into haunted house stories, you may want to give it a watch.
