Bringing Up Baby (1938)

Bringing Up Baby (1938)

Director: Howard Hawks
Starring: Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Charles Ruggles

Synopsis:
A harried zoologist angling for a large donation for his museum gets entangled with a flighty heiress and her pet leopard.

Impressions:
Interestingly enough, this film flopped on release and hurt the careers of both Katharine Hepburn and director Howard Hawks. It was later vindicated by history, but the damage was done. It's a shame, as I'm a fan of Hawks. It really is a fun, zany comedy with rapid-fire dialog and pratfalls. Katharine Hepburn studied with some vaudeville performers to improve her comic chops and it really shows. She plays off Cary Grant really well and the supporting cast do a fine job of adding to the comic scenario, particularly May Robson as Aunt Elizabeth. It's a lot of fun and highly recommend it. By all means, give it a watch.
