Impressions:
After seeing a Gridman short by Trigger for the Japan Animator Expo, it was no surprise to see them doing a Gridman series. I honestly know very little about the original series, either the original or its American adaptation, but I do have some appreciation for toku and this series definitely plays as a love letter to fans of the genre. Pretty much any time I'd see a new form of Gridman, I'd imagine the toy commercial following during the break, just like all those shows from my childhood in the 80s. This is a rather fun series with some good character dynamics. I particularly like the affably evil take on the main villain, Alexis Kerib. Now, if you went by the Internet's response, you'd think the main feature of the series wasn't kaijuu fighting action but rather Rikka's thighs. Maybe I'm just dull to such things, but it didn't seem like they were given that much emphasis. Anyway, the fact that there are so many unashamed and explicit references to the Ultra series among others really let's you know how much the crew is invested as fans, something that shouldn't come as too much of a surprise if you know the studio's pedigree. Like I said, I thought it was fun and definitely would recommend giving it a watch.
