Sing (2016)
Director: Garth Jennings, Christophe Lourdelet
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane
Synopsis:
A theater owner on his last legs promotes a singing contest that draws a number of unlikely performers.
Impressions:
I've said on numerous occasions that I don't really relate to the music scene, so this movie didn't really have much to draw me in. However, having seen it, I will say that Illumination's craft is continuing to improve to the point where they can seriously rival the other major animation studios. There are some rather impressive sequences. While the story and characters are nothing amazing, they work well enough, banking on such things as Matthew McConaughey's charisma for the promoter Buster Moon. I can only imagine how much trouble it must've been to license all the songs that they did. If you're a fan of shows like American Idol or you just like cartoon animal antics, I think it's worth a watch.
