Overlord (2015)

Director: Naoyuki Ito
Studio: Madhouse
Starring: Satoshi Hino, Yumi Hara, Sumire Uesaka
Episodes: 12

Synopsis:
When the once popular MMORPG Yggdrasil goes offline, player Momonga finds himself inhabiting the body of his avatar and sets out on a quest for world domination.

Impressions:
We're seeing a number of series about players getting stuck in game worlds in recent years. If you've been following any of these series, you might be inclined to pass on this one, but I would recommend giving it a shot. I was hooked right away. I liked the idea of the protagonist basically being the final boss of your average RPG and the dualism of the player and the character. Another thing is that while Momonga/Ains is dramatically overpowered, he's very cautious and calculating, not willing to take any stupid risks along the way. Compare and contrast with more wildly hubristic types like Lelouch or Light Yagami. Some of the chatter I've been hearing charges that the series isn't a very good adaptation of the original light novel series, but since I haven't read the light novels, I wasn't really disappointed with what I got. The ending was a bit abrupt, though. We'll see if a follow-up is in the offing. I recommend giving it a watch.
