Rio Bravo (1959)

Rio Bravo (1959)

Director: Howard Hawks
Starring: John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson

Synopsis:
A sheriff and his deputies are besieged by the hired guns of a murderer's brother.

Impressions:
You know this movie is good because Howard Hawks made it twice, to say nothing of being later remade as Assault on Precinct 13 (which was then itself remade). There's good dialog and great characters with a final shootout that's one of the better ones out there. John Wayne is reliably solid, Dean Martin plays the rather complex Dude, Angie Dickinson is good as the love interest Feathers, and Walter Brennan is a treasure as wily old Stumpy. Speaking of Dude, the shift in the vernacular makes a lot of the dialog unintentionally funny. Having two singers in the cast (Martin and Ricky Nelson as young gun Colorado), there's a bit of a musical interlude, which I don't mind because it's a pretty good song. This is a fine Western and definitely worth watching. By all means, give it a watch.
