May (2002)

May (2002)

Director: Lucky McKee
Starring: Angela Bettis, Jeremy Sisto, Anna Faris

Synopsis:
A socially awkward girl tries to romance a guy she is obsessed with.

Impressions:
I was drawn to this movie by its rather striking cover, which in no way reflects the film whatsoever. (The main character does undergo a makeover at the end, but it isn't nearly as extreme.) You might be surprised to find that most of the film is a romantic dramedy that only descends into horror in the third act. Some scenes that are supposed to be horrific come across as more comical than anything, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, so long as you aren't taking things too seriously. Angela Bettis is incredibly cute as the awkward May, but the crazy progressively ramps up as the story goes along. Anna Faris surprises in a non-comedic role as May's nymphomaniacal coworker. Like May herself, this is a bit of an odd duck of a film, but I think it's still worth a watch.
