Impressions:
I really like fantasy movies of the 80s. (I like a lot of things from the 80s, as you probably know.) And while this isn't as good as, say, The NeverEnding Story, it's still really good. Yes, the story may be fairly standard, but I don't care. If you like fantasy, you'll like this. Tim Curry is amazing as the villain Darkness and the makeup is top-rate, rightfully nominated for an Oscar. There's a bit of debate about the score. There's the more conventional rendering by Jerry Goldsmith and the more 80s take by Tangerine Dream. Honestly, both versions have their merits, so it boils down to what kind of experience you want. By all means, try both and see what does it for you. The claim that there's an influence on the Legend of Zelda series may be apocryphal, but that could be another angle to lure you in. Give it a watch.
By the by, I can't comment on the theatrical release versus the director's cut as I haven't compared them side by side. If I do in the near future, I'll update the review accordingly.
