20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)

Director: Richard Fleischer
Starring: Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Paul Lukas

Synopsis:
A French scientist, his assistant and a harpooner are thrown overboard during an attack by a sea monster that is actually a submarine commanded by the enigmatic Captain Nemo.

Impressions:
Not having read the original novel, I can't comment on the fidelity of the adaptation, but in its own right, it's an enjoyable film. James Mason is great as Captain Nemo and Kirk Douglas and Peter Lorre have good interactions with each other. For that matter, Kirk Douglas' character also has a good dynamic with Esmerelda the seal. I really like the aesthetic of the Nautilus and the special effects are quite good. It's a good film and I strongly recommend it.
