Synopsis:
Alien invaders known as the Mimics seem to be on the verge of overrunning the Earth, but with the new Jacket technology and elite soldiers like "the Angel of Verdun" Rita Vrataski, it seems like humanity has a chance at victory. American PA officer Major William Cage finds himself shanghaied into a unit of misfits and placed on the frontlines for the Normandy invasion of Operation Downfall, where he dies horribly. Only his death is just the beginning.

Impressions:
I've heard Edge of Tomorrow described as "Videogames: The Movie" and it really is true. The movie is essentially about save-scumming your way to victory. I haven't read the original Japanese light novel yet (getting that and the manga is on the agenda for my upcoming Japan trip), but I feel this was a pragmatic adaptation for mass market appeal that doesn't really sacrifice much in the way of quality. There's outstanding action, loads of black comedy and even some poignant drama rolled into a very entertaining package.

Tom Cruise managed to wreck his public persona several years back, but I can't help but find him appealing in his film roles, a testament to his talent as an actor. I like how instead of fresh-faced recruit Keiji Kiriya of the original, Cage is a fast-talking coward who has to grow into being a warrior. It's a nice aversion from Cruise's typical roles. Emily Blunt is quite good as Rita. I liked her in Looper and I'll continue to keep an eye out for her in the future. Special mention goes to Bill Paxton's amazing supporting role as Master Sergeant Farrell. It's nice to see Hudson has grown up to be Apone. ^o^

Bottom line: This is a dang good film and I regret not seeing it in theaters. Do yourself a favor and check this one out.
