Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

Director: Bryan Singer
Starring: Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee

Synopsis:
A look at the rock band Queen and its lead singer Freddie Mercury from the band's start to its 1985 performance at Live Aid.

Impressions:
Being a Highlander fan, I like the music of Queen fairly well, though I'm not that much of a music person. I knew some people who saw this film and it came rather highly recommended, so I decided to give it a shot. I don't know how true to life it is, but any deviations from real life aside, the movie spins a good yarn. Rami Malek's performance as Freddie Mercury deserves all the praise it gets. I like that the movie is neither hagiography nor hatchet job. It shows both the good and the bad in a rather even-handed way. I was also interested in Queen's experimental approach to music and their emphasis on audience involvement. If you're a Queen aficionado, you may well want it in your collection, but I'll say it's worth a watch at the very least.
