Big Hero 6 (2014)

Synopsis:
Whiz kid Hiro Hamada forms an unlikely superhero team consisting of a robot designed by his brother and his brother's classmates.

Impressions:
I've been on pins and needles watching the returns for Big Hero 6 because this is the kind of movie I want to see Disney make more of. Of course it can't do Frozen numbers, but the last thing I want is to see Disney to conclude they somehow made a mistake on this. If you couldn't tell, I like Big Hero 6. I like it a lot. Much like Wreck-It Ralph, it isn't the kind of movie you'd expect from mainline Disney, but I'm glad to have it.

On every level, this one knocks it out of the park. Humor, action, drama. Art direction, character design, all-around appeal. I walked away from the theater opening night quite satisfied and was sure to get the whole family together for a subsequent viewing. Even though I have some mixed feelings about Frozen, Disney's been scoring one hit after another in a way I haven't seen since the Disney Renaissance in the 90s. I couldn't be happier.

I could probably go on a long time about the movie, but I'll just make one more quick note. I really dug the US-Japanese fusion of San Fransokyo. This is the kind of world we wish we would've gotten if the bubble hadn't burst.

A well-deserved Oscar win. Go out and get it now.
