Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku (2018)
[ヲタクに恋は難しい]
Director: Yoshimasa Hiraike
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Starring: Arisa Date, Kent Ito, Miyuki Sawashiro
Episodes: 11
Synopsis:
After her hobbies were discovered, a closeted otaku transfers to a different company, where she is reunited with her childhood friend.
Impressions:
The premise alone was enough to catch my interest, an office romance among otaku. The main quartet is excellent and play off each other quite well. While Narumi and Hirotaka make a cute couple, the belligerent relationship of Kabakura and Koyanagi is particularly entertaining, to the point that it's the main draw for many people (and props to Tomokazu Sugita and Miyuki Sawashiro for their performances). Whatever side of otaku culture interests you, it's probably going to get some decent representation here, which is nice (and unlike the usual bland name products you see in anime and such, we get a lot of real franchises on display). It's mostly light viewing, but there are occasional heavier moments where the characters deal with their complexes and insecurities without getting bogged down by it like a lot of romcoms that slump into a drama arc. I really liked it and happily recommend adding it to your collection.
