Impressions:
When I first saw this, I thought the original was made by Azumanga Daioh's Kiyohiko Azuma, but that wasn't the case. This does feel a bit like a more random Azumanga Daioh, though. It also makes me think a bit of Monty Python's Flying Circus with its nonsensical and bizarre sketches played straight. If you don't have something of a bent sense of humor, you may just be scratching your head, but if the series' sense of humor clicks with you, you're in for a lot of fun. The fairly simple designs belie the often lush animation and elaborate set pieces. The majestic orchestral score by Yuji Nomi plays into the humor to good effect. And although it's not necessary to keep track of all the running gags and such, it is quite a treat for people with a head for continuity. I enjoyed it quite a bit and can easily recommend adding it to your collection.
