Synopsis:
Anya is kidnapped by rogue agents in the military after she accidentally eats a chocolate with a microfilm outlining a new superweapon that could kick off war between Westalis and Ostania.
Impressions:
I caught this on a late-night showing opening day right before I headed home for Christmas just so I could tell my niece about it. This is an original story and as such won't have an impact on the larger plotline of the series, as many of these theatrical outings do, but what it lacks in overall plot relevance, it makes up for in spectacle. There are some rather fantastic action set pieces to be had, which alone should make it worth the price of admission for SxF fans.] We have three plotlines at work here: the main story about the microfilm and Anya's kidnapping, the effort to recreate a dessert to hopefully win a Stella in a cooking performance, and Yor being paranoid that Loid might be cheating on her after hearing gossip from her coworker. The B-plot is mostly an excuse to set up the A-plot and the C-plot is mostly just there for comedy. If you've seen 1941, you can probably imagine how they deal with Anya eating the all-important microfilm. Let's just say that "The World of Poop" is a thing, with a psychedelic sequence that warrants its own art director (and what a resume credit that must be). With all that happens in the finale, you'll probably be left wondering how Loid and Yor's respective covers haven't been blown, but the writers just kinda wink at the audience and expect us to roll with it. It's definitely a fun movie and I recommend giving it a watch, but knowing there's not much meat and potatoes to be had, I can't quite say it warrants a place in the collection, but if you're a big enough fan of the series, you might say otherwise.
