Impressions:
You know, I didn't think this movie was happening, so it was a pleasant surprise when I saw the first teaser. I was rather pumped at the prospect of John Boyega taking the role of the junior Pentecost and he does well here. I wasn't expecting him to be placed in a mentorship role, so that was interesting. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Scott Eastwood hold his own. It would seem that his star is rising and that's cool to see. Speaking of the Boyega-Eastwood dynamic, I like how there's tension but that it gets set aside in the face of bigger priorities. There were some unexpected twists in the story and I enjoyed how it played out. The focus on the cadets seems a bit like deliberate kid appeal, which may or may not be a turn-off for you. I didn't mind it personally. There is plenty of giant robot action as you'd expect and quite the sequel hook. If you liked the first film and you appreciate what it has to offer, you should have no complaints. Give it a watch.
