Deadpool (2016)

Synopsis:
A wisecracking mercenary with terminal cancer volunteers for an experimental treatment that awakens his latent mutant powers but leaves him disfigured, then seeks revenge on the people responsible.

Impressions:
This movie was highly anticipated in my circle, but not without some trepidation. As promising as the trailers were, there was a fear that they'd still botch the final product. Happily, those fears can be set aside. I don't claim to be a Deadpool expert, but from what I know, they nailed it. They went for the hard R and didn't pull any punches. On the one hand, the raunchy humor and comedic sociopathy isn't going to be for everyone, but the people who come to a Deadpool movie expecting Deadpool to be Deadpool are going to be rather satisfied, I think. Ryan Reynolds really tears it up as the title character. He's clearly devoted to the role and has a lot of fun with it. He has good chemistry with romantic lead Morena Baccarin and amusing banter with comic relief TJ Miller and Leslie Uggams. Ed Skrein and Gina Carano make a pretty good villainous duo and I enjoyed Colossus as the boy scout foil to Deadpool's antihero antics. If you like copious reference and fourth wall-breaking humor, you'll get it in spades. As I said, it's definitely not for everyone, but if you're intrigued by the trailers, I'd say you're pretty sure to enjoy yourself. If that sounds like you, give it a watch.
