Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)

Director: Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise
Starring: Michael J Fox, Claudia Christian, Corey Burton

Synopsis:
A linguist derided as a crackpot gets the opportunity to put his theories to the test in an expedition in search of Atlantis.

Impressions:
As the quality of Disney's output started to decline in the waning years of the Renaissance, I stopped following their films. I had seen Hercules and The Emperor's New Groove, which showed they could still make entertaining movies if not on the same scope as the heavy-hitters from the early to mid-90s. In retrospect, I would've liked to have seen this sooner. It's honestly pretty good. Comparisons to Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water can be made, but I'm sure it's entirely coincidental, just like with The Lion King and Jungle Taitei. The art style is fairly distinctive. It feels a bit rough but still works and the imagining of Atlantis is rather good. There's a nice varied cast of characters and some good dynamics going on. I would've liked to get more development with Kida, but there's only so much you can do in the runtime. All told, it's a good ride and worth a watch.
