16 Blocks (2006)
Director: Richard Donner
Starring: Bruce Willis, Mos Def, David Morse
Synopsis:
A cop on the rocks has a simple job: escort a witness to the courthouse. All this goes awry when people start gunning for the witness and he has to risk everything to get the witness to the trial.
Impressions:
I kinda like movies where Bruce Willis plays a schlubby burnt-out husk of a man. It plays against type and he nevertheless handles it well. While there's nevertheless a good bit of action to be had, I wouldn't classify this as an action movie per se. It's more of a thriller where the line between good and bad is blurred with a clever twist at the end. Besides Bruce Willis' performance, Mos Def does well as the ambiguous disordered motormouth witness (he's annoying, but that's the point) as does David Morse as the partner of Bruce Willis' character. The movie's theme about people being able to change is an interesting counterpoint to those who would assert otherwise. All in all, a good film worth seeing.
