Night of the Living Dead (1990)
Director: Tom Savini
Starring: Tony Todd, Patricia Tallman, Tom Towles
Synopsis:
Survivors hole up in a farmhouse besieged by zombies.
Impressions:
Now, normally a remake of an iconic film gets a chilly reception and often rightfully so. However, George Romero actually produced this and wrote the updated screenplay, so this isn't like one of the many unofficial sequels made by the Italians or anything like that. I don't know if I'd call it better than the original, but it stands toe-to-toe at least. I do like that Barbara is more proactive character rather than being an inert lump. There are some other elements where the formula of the original gets played with, so that means there are some special surprises for people who saw the original first. This movie doesn't break new ground like the original did, but it's solid and a worthy update. The cheap synth music may be a bit of a downside depending on your view, but that's not much of a problem. Give this one a watch.
