The Fly (1986)

Synopsis:
A scientist's experiments with teleportation go awry when he tests the technology on himself.

Impressions:
There are quite a few horror movies from the 80s, but this is one of the better ones. I'd strongly argue this is perhaps the most accessible of Cronenberg's films (that I've seen, at least) and that's not a bad thing. You still get his signature touch without being too obtuse. While Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis had been acting for years before this film, many would say that this is the point that they became stars. Both deliver strong performances and Goldblum in particular shows a lot of range. I have to agree with Gene Siskel that he deserved an Oscar nod for this. The ladies will no doubt appreciate the fanservice he provides (possibly even enough to offset all the fan disservice). Being a Cronenberg film, the body horror aspect is in full effect with some amazing (and really gross) special effects. Also, the pacing is all but perfect, carefully setting things up and building the tension while still moving forward at a good clip. This is how you do a modern update of a classic film. I highly recommend it.
