The Return of the Musketeers (1989)

The Return of the Musketeers (1989)

Director: Richard Lester
Starring: Michael York, Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay

Synopsis:
D'Artagnan is commissioned by Cardinal Mazarin to reassemble his Musketeer companions to ward off a popular uprising.

Impressions:
These Richard Lester Musketeer films are the only ones I know of that maintain most of the same cast and almost match the time skip between The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After in real time. The cinematography and overall tone of the film is quite consistent with the prior two, but this was a troubled production that drove the director from feature film and led to the death of Roy Kinnear, who plays comic relief Planchet. If you liked the previous two movies, you should enjoy this one. I liked how they reimagined Mordaunt as a dark action girl played quite well by Kim Cattrall. (I would've liked to seen more of the villainous team-up of her and Christopher Lee's Rochefort.) I also want to credit Alan Howard's portrayal of a rather cunning Oliver Cromwell. Though far from perfect, I'd still say this one is worth watching.
