Poltergeist (1982)
Director: Tobe Hooper
Starring: JoBeth Williams, Craig T Nelson, Heather O'Rourke
Synopsis:
When a family moves into a new house, all seems well until strange things start happening.
Impressions:
Before we had Paranormal Activity or any of its sequels and imitators, this movie was the one for your haunting fun. I'd argue it's still the definitive film, though to be fair to the more recent stuff, I haven't seen any of it myself, so I can't say for sure. Anyway, if you like supernatural fare, you should definitely see this movie. Personally, I'm not much of a fan of this kind of film, but I can recognize the quality here. With Spielberg writing, it almost feels like one of his own movies from the era. I don't know if Tobe Hooper was imitating Spielberg's style or if it's just my imagination.
We have solid performances by Craig T Nelson and JoBeth Williams as Mr. and Mrs. Freeling, but I also want to credit Heather O'Rourke for her iconic performance as Carol Anne and showstealer Zelda Rubinstein as the medium Tangina.
As I said, this sort of thing isn't usually my kind of film, but I'd definitely recommend giving this one a watch.
