Rooster Cogburn (1975)

Rooster Cogburn (1975)

Director: Stuart Millar
Starring: John Wayne, Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Zerbe

Synopsis:
Rooster Cogburn is pulled out of retirement to hunt down a group of outlaws who stole a shipment of Army nitro and is joined by the daughter of a minister they murdered.

Impressions:
It's a daunting challenge trying to follow up a film like True Grit and I won't deny that this movie pales in comparison to the original, but it's still a worthwhile viewing experience. There's a little more comedy to be had, which may or may not be a plus for you, and some god chemistry between John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn. The dynamics of the core trio of Rooster, Miss Goodnight and Wolf is solid. I also like Anthony Zerbe's morally grey Breed, offset by the more hammy villainy of Richard Jordan's Hawk. It may not measure up to the first film, but I'd still say to give it a watch.
