F for Fake (1973)
Director: Orson Welles
Starring: Orson Welles, Oja Kodar, François Reichenbach
Synopsis:
A documentary about the art forger Elmyr de Hory, his fraudulent biographer Clifford Irving and director Orson Welles' own ruminations on fakery.
Impressions:
This is a fascinating film. It started out as a documentary about Elmyr de Hory, but when it was revealed that his biographer faked a biography of Howard Hughes, Orson Welles got on board and decided to have fun with audience. De Hory's story alone is certainly interesting enough on its own, but then you add in Irving, Hughes and Welles to make a really fun mix. Although Welles promises to tell the truth for the first hour, the line between fact and fiction gets blurred considerably. Welles' love of magic tricks plays in well with the theme. Definitely give this one a watch. It's well worth it.
