True Grit (1969)

Synopsis:
A girl hires a tough but somewhat disreputable marshal to find her father's killer and bring him to justice.

Impressions:
One thing I like about this movie is that John Wayne does for himself what Cary Grant does in Father Goose, takes the image of the sort of character you expect him to play and drags it through the mud and marinates it heavily in some cheap booze. The character of Rooster Cogburn is great; rough, crude and sloppy, but he gets the job done. Despite tensions behind the scenes, I also liked Kim Darby as Mattie. There's just something amusing about a kid with a very lawyerly approach to the Wild West. And though he's not onscreen that long, Robert Duvall is also good as Ned Pepper. If you like Westerns and John Wayne's twilight films in particular, definitely give this one a watch.
