To Catch a Thief (1955)

To Catch a Thief (1955)

Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Starring: Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Jessie Royce Landis

Synopsis:
A former jewel thief falls under suspicion when there is a rash of new thefts and the only way to clear his name is to find the copycat.

Impressions:
This is a great film. Hitchcock can be relied upon to bring the goods and this is one of his best. It's very sharply written and delivered expertly by Cary Grant as John Robie. Grace Kelly is quite lovely in this as the primary love interest, but I also like Brigitte Auber as the precocious Danielle. Jessie Royce Landis is also quite entertaining as the tough nouveau riche type who has the uptown style without losing the downtown sensibility. (It's a character type I particularly enjoy.) There are some good twists and turns and the staples of Hitchcock's films play out nicely. The score by Lyn Murray also deserves note. This is definitely one for the collection.
