Saint Joan (1957)
Director: Otto Preminger
Starring: Jean Seberg, Richard Widmark, Richard Todd
Synopsis:
An aging Charles VII of France has a vision of Joan of Arc, who recalls the major events of her life.
Impressions:
I didn't realize at first that this was an adaptation of Shaw's play, but the wit in the dialog quickly clued me in. Jean Seberg is quite good as the energetic and sharp-tongued Joan and having just seen Judgment at Nuremberg, it's such a swerve seeing Richard Widmark as the immature and effete Dauphin (when compared to the hard-hitting Colonel Lawson). I also thought John Gielgud and Felix Aylmer were good as the Earl of Warwich and the Inquisitor. If you like the George Bernard Shaw wit, this is well worth watching.
