Men in War (1957)

Director: Anthony Mann
Starring: Robert Ryan, Aldo Ray, Robert Keith
Synopsis:
A lieutenant and the remnants of his platoon are trapped behind enemy lines and must try to find relief, picking up a catatonic colonel and his loyal driver along the way.
Impressions:
There are plenty of trapped behind enemy lines stories, but what makes this one stand out is the antagonism and uneasy cooperation between Robert Ryan and Aldo Ray's characters. This dynamic makes the movie. I was drawn to Montana's dogged loyalty to the Colonel whose mind is completely broken. There are some other decent character elements but these are significantly overshadowed by the Ryan/Ray dynamic. Give this one a watch.
