At the Circus (1939)
Director: Edward Buzzell
Starring: Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Harpo Marx
Synopsis:
A crooked lawyer is hired to save a struggling circus.
Impressions:
The Marx Brothers work best when the Marx Brothers are doing their thing. Unfortunately, most of the time the studios seemed to think they needed to play second fiddle to some boring love story with terrible songs. As such, there's not a lot of redeeming value here. Chico and Harpo's antics are always fun, but such scenes are oases in the desert. Duck Soup is about as good as the Marx Brothers' movies get and most anything else is going to come up short by comparison. If you're a die-hard fan, you might be willing to give it a shot. Otherwise, pass on it.
