Allegheny Uprising (1939)

Synopsis:
Pennsylvania settlers battle merchants trading weapons with the Indians and the British soldiers who give them cover.

Impressions:
You don't see too many films set between the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. It's an interesting time period of rising tensions in the Colonies that could use a little more attention. John Wayne's star was still rising at this point in his career, hence his second billing to Claire Trevor, who plays his spitfire love interest. I liked George Sanders in the antagonist role because it not only plays to his strengths but also because Captain Swanson isn't actually a collaborator with the corrupt merchants, merely a proud, stubborn soldier contemptuous of the Colonists (but not without some signs of redeeming qualities, making for a rather layered character). It's a solid film and definitely worth watching.
