The Thief of Bagdad (1924)

The Thief of Bagdad (1924)

Director: Raoul Walsh
Starring: Douglas Fairbanks, Julanne Johnston, Snitz Edwards

Synopsis:
A thief falls in love with the Caliph's daughter. He and three rival suitors then seek out rare treasures to win the contest for her hand.

Impressions:
While the 1940 version is probably the better remembered, this too is a rather good film in its own right. Being a silent film, selling the performances is entirely a matter of body language and facial expression. Douglas Fairbanks' athleticism serves him well in the role of the thief Ahmed. Specials mention goes to Anna May Wong for her role as the treacherous Mongol slave who conspires with the Mongol prince. There are some impressive special effects for the era and some clever tricks such as using children as extras around the animals of the Caliph's bestiary to make them appear giant. It may not be regarded quite as fondly as its successor, but it still has a place in cinema history and is worth viewing.
