The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)

Director: Mamoru Hosoda
Starring: Riisa Naka, Takuya Ishida, Mitsutaka Itakura

Synopsis:
A high school girl gains the ability to time travel and quickly decided to use her new talent to improve her life.

Impressions:
This movie originally came up on my radar because Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is the character designer. You may not think that's much of a reason, but for someone like me where the aesthetic is a large part of what with draw me to a series, it was enough. Until about the second act, this is a fairly lighthearted movie of a fairly simple-minded girl using extraordinary powers for very trivial reasons. Then the consequences of her actions start to pile up. It's an interesting take that takes some elements of a Groundhog's Day loop but doesn't strictly play to any one category of time travel story. It may just be me, but the animation and the characters occasionally seemed a bit wonky, just enough to distract but not really a dealbreaker. All told, it's not a mind-blowing film by any stretch, but it's enjoyable enough and certainly worth a watch.
