From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga (1983)

From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga (1983)

Director: Richard Schickel
Starring: Mark Hamill, George Lucas, Anthony Daniels

Synopsis:
A look at the making of the Star Wars trilogy following the release of Return of the Jedi.

Impressions:
I remember seeing the promo for this documentary on our VHS copy of the Original Trilogy time and time again and yet it is only now that I finally went about hunting it down to watch it. While nowhere near as comprehensive as the much later Empire of Dreams (which also has the advantage of over 20 years' retrospective), this was made shortly after Episode VI, so we get a much closer look when the OT had just concluded. It's mostly a broad overview of the special effects and the themes of the story, but we get some footage you won't see anywhere else and there's a lot of commentary by George Lucas at the time that becomes particularly ironic in light of the Prequel Trilogy. The writing for the narration can be a bit hokey at times, but you might find some charm to it. Yes, I know. "Awkward writing in my Star Wars? Inconceivable!" Any Star Wars fan will have more than enough reason to give it a watch.
