The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934)

The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934)

Director: Harold Young
Starring: Leslie Howard, Merle Oberon, Raymond Massey

Synopsis:
A shallow fop leads a double life as the Scarlet Pimpernel, saving the lives of aristocrats sentenced to death in revolutionary France.

Impressions:
Regardless of how you feel about the politics of the French Revolution, this is a fun little movie with a story in the tradition of many classical tales of derring-do. Leslie Howard is amazing as Sir Percy. His dandy persona is terribly entertaining and the real character underneath is rather compelling as well. I also liked Raymond Massey as the sinister Chauvelin. There's some pretty witty writing and it's a good popcorn-muncher. Give it a watch.
