House (1977)

Director: Nobuhiko Obayashi
Starring: Kimiko Ikegami, Miki Jinbo, Kumiko Ohba

Synopsis:
A girl invites her friends to her aunt's house in the country. Little do they realize that the house is haunted until it starts claiming one after the other.

Impressions:
Well, this is certainly an experience. This starts out like a high school sitcom, then dips into classic Japanese horror but never loses its comedic edge. It's full of 60s-esque trippiness (even though it was made in the 70s) and it honestly wouldn't take much to have played it as straight horror, but it's a lot more memorable as a parody. It's very quirky and if you don't key into its sense of weirdness, you may not enjoy yourself. If you embrace the absurdity, though, you're in for a fun ride. You may well walk away from it puzzled, but I'm pretty sure you'll have a laugh or two along the way. By the way, if we're taking waifu votes, Kung Fu is the hero Japan needs. Anyway, give this one a watch.
